NERM-schedule

October 4th-October 9th

Monday, arrival day:

  • Breakfast and lunch will be prepared for those who arrive early.

  • In the evening we’ll have a welcome-dinner where we go through what’s going to happen during the week. We’ll also have a professor in forest products and markets giving us an introduction on Swedish forestry from the beginning to present.

  • The night we’ll spend in Umeå.

Tuesday:

  • After breakfast we’ll start our three day bus trip and the first place to visit is “Vindeln Experimental Forests” which is a part of SLU’s field studies. You can read more about them at: http://vfp.esf.slu.se/ (there is a button on the right upper corner that will translate the text to English).
  • Vindeln is located by a beautiful river and you will be given the opportunity to explore the nature, learn more about fishing in our untamed rivers and do other fun outdoor activities.

  • Dinner will be served by Norra Skogsagarna. (www.norra.se)

  • We will spend the night in Vindeln.

Wednesday:

  • SCA, one of the world’s largest producers of pulp and paper, will present their way to manage Swedish forests in a big scale perspective. You can visit them at: http://www.sca.com/.
  • Norra Skogsagarna (www.norra.se ) will give us a tour guide in one of their demo forests and we’ll see how it can be made possible to manage forests in a smaller perspective and with different goals other than production.
  • In the evening we’ll go to Ammarnäs up in the mountains where we’ll spend the night.

Thursday:

  • Today we’ll visit a Sami-village (Same are the original inhabitants of Sweden), and hopefully the opportunity to see some reindeer will appear.

  • People from the Sami Information Centre will give us a presentation on reindeer husbandry and how life is like living as Sami in an urbanizing society. We’ll also learn how modern forestry and reindeer husbandry can be combined. To read more about same people visit www.eng.samer.se/
  • We’ll also use the day to go hiking so that you can really explore the Swedish nature.

  • In the evening it’s time to return to Umeå, where we will spend the night.

Friday:

  • Today we’ll visit our school and get an introduction on our masters programs and PhD’s.

  • A workshop is going to be arranged to summarize our experiences and discuss questions that’s come up during our trip through northern Sweden.

  • Free time for sightseeing in Umeå or a relaxing time in our traditional forestry master sauna will be available.

  • In the evening we’ll have a banquette, where you and the students at our school are invited.

Saturday, departure day:

  • Now it’s time to say good-bye. Depending on when your flight are leaving we will arrange for you to have something to eat during the day.

There is a possibility that changes in the schedule will be done.

We will upgrade the schedule on our blog if so.
