How to get to Umeå

June 20, 2010 Leave a comment

Perhaps you now have started to try to figure out the best way to get to Umeå, Sweden from your hometowns. Here follows some travelling advice.

To travel by plane is probably the fastest and most comfortable way of getting here, and for you to find the cheapest connections from your home country I guess that you are more capable of than I am, so I wont give you any advice in that matter.

If you want to come here in a more environmental friendly way you can either take the train or the bus.

The train connections are today not the best, a new railroad (Botniabanan) is under construction and is supposed to be ready to take on passengers by the end of August, the problem with that is that you can not yet book tickets and I have no idea when they are available.. The Swedish railroad company that have connections to Umeå today is called SJ, you will get to their English site on this link:

http://www.sj.se/sj/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=10&l=en

By bus Ybus I think is the way to go, they have good connections from Stockholm to Umeå. Their English site you will reach by this link:

https://portal.ybuss.se/boka/index.asp?id=0&language=2

Both the trains and the busses are departed from the same building in Stockholm; Stockholm Central Station.

When you get o Umeå, we will try to arrange that we are the ones picking you up with our cars. If this turns out to be hard for us to do the connections from the train station, bus station and the airport to our school (where the dinner will take place on Monday the 4th, and also where we’re probably will spend the night as well) are very good and it’s not far in distance.

We will soon send you more info in how you will pay the registration fee, the deadline for this will probably be in the end of July.

Do please contact me on hilma_87@hotmail.com if you have any further questions.

October 4th-October 9th

Monday, arrival day:

  • Breakfast and lunch will be prepared for those who arrive early.

  • In the evening we’ll have a welcome-dinner where we go through what’s going to happen during the week. We’ll also have a professor in forest products and markets giving us an introduction on Swedish forestry from the beginning to present.

  • The night we’ll spend in Umeå.

Tuesday:

  • After breakfast we’ll start our three day bus trip and the first place to visit is “Vindeln Experimental Forests” which is a part of SLU’s field studies. You can read more about them at: http://vfp.esf.slu.se/ (there is a button on the right upper corner that will translate the text to English).
  • Vindeln is located by a beautiful river and you will be given the opportunity to explore the nature, learn more about fishing in our untamed rivers and do other fun outdoor activities.

  • Dinner will be served by Norra Skogsagarna. (www.norra.se)

  • We will spend the night in Vindeln.

Wednesday:

  • SCA, one of the world’s largest producers of pulp and paper, will present their way to manage Swedish forests in a big scale perspective. You can visit them at: http://www.sca.com/.

  • In the evening we’ll go to Ammarnäs up in the mountains where we’ll spend the night.

Thursday:

  • Today we’ll visit a Sami-village (Same are the original inhabitants of Sweden), and hopefully the opportunity to see some reindeer will appear.

  • People from the Sami Information Centre will give us a presentation on reindeer husbandry and how life is like living as Sami in an urbanizing society. We’ll also learn how modern forestry and reindeer husbandry can be combined. To read more about same people visit www.eng.samer.se/
  • We’ll also use the day to go hiking so that you can really explore the Swedish nature.

  • In the evening it’s time to return to Umeå, where we will spend the night.

FFINE

March 21, 2010 Leave a comment

We have now picked a theme for the NERM of 2010; “Future Forest Of Northern Europe”, shortened as FFINE. We will arrange meetings with some of Sweden’s largest forest companies and visit a Science Park. The program will contain culture aspects as well as scientific ones. The meeting will have its start on Monday, October 4th, with a dinner and a chance to get to know each other before we, on Tuesday, start our adventure with a bus trip in the northern parts of Sweden. The journey will end in Umeå on Saturday morning, October 9th, but we’re hoping to being able to offer a place to sleep if your staying will extend till Sunday.

We want to let you have a chance to really experience the beauty of the nature in Sweden and are planning something fun for us to do together, perhaps a hike in the mountains. Does that sound fun to you?

Is there anything you would like to experience when in Sweden? Please do give us comments!

Best regards

Hilma

days of the Swedish autumn

March 21, 2010 Leave a comment

Birches look like this in October if the frost shows up on time

…other places aren’t that privileged. But either way they do have a beauty of their own.

In the autumn the forest turns into a place where you can find all sorts of delights. We begin to collect the accessories we later will offer at the upcming dinners. Chanterelles for stew..

…and cloudberries for jam and dessert.

It will be fantastic meals if you get to bring the delights all the way home… or you could just stay in the nature.

All the best//

Welcome!

February 12, 2010 Leave a comment

Welcome to the NERM of 2010:s blogspot!

You may wonder what “NERM” stands for and what it really is. Well, “NERM” is short for “Northern European Region Meeting” and by that we think we’ve also managed to give you a glimpse of its concept;  NERM is a meeting that in first hand is meant for the LC:s in the Northern parts of Europe, we’ve counted you to be 21 pairs.

This year the honour has come to Sweden to act as hosts for this event, which we’re really excited about. The idea is to have the meeting sometime in the first week of October. We’re hoping being able to go on a small trip around the northern parts of Sweden and let you experience the beauty of a nordic fall. On this trip we want to show you how the forest in Sweden is taken care of.

Since we’re just in the beginning of organizing this meeting, we can’t give you much more information about the details right now. Please do visit the NERM-blog at regularly basis because it’s going to be updated as we progress. What we can give out is that we’re hoping having the invitations ready on IFSA:s homepage at the end of April.

Over and out//Hilma
